Important Information About Accutane (Isotretinoin)

Accutane (generic name Isotretinoin) is intended for severe acne treatment. This medication is a retinoid which means that it derives from vitamin A. As a rule this medication is prescribed when the usual treatments (including other antibiotics or acne medications) of acne are not effective. This medication works by decreasing the amount of oil secreted by skin glands. As a result it enables the skin to renovate itself more quickly.

The use of Accutane

It’s important to use Accutane as it is prescribed by the medical provider. Follow the dosage regimen (the amount and the period of using the medicine) according to the doctor’s recommendations. Read carefully the directions indicated on the prescription label of the medication.

It is advisable to take Accutane with water to prevent the pill from melting in the food pipe, which can cause irritation. You may take this medication with food or milk.

It’s strongly recommended to take Accutane during the whole period that is prescribed by the medical provider. Don’t worry if your acne becomes worse at the beginning of the treatment as soon your condition will start to improve.

During the treatment with Accutane one should pass through medical tests regularly, particularly, your blood should be tested to ensure this medication performs well in your body and doesn’t cause negative effects. Check your liver function as well in order to prevent unfavourable effects.

Accutane side effects

If any of types of allergic reactions such ashives, laboured breathing,and swelling of your face, tongue, lips or throat occur, seek medical attention immediately.

You should stop the use of this medication and call your medical provider if the following adverse effects occur: numbness, weakness, depressed mood, changes in behavior, hallucinations, decreased concentrating, sleep disorders, crying spells, agitation,  suicidal thoughts,  blurred vision, extreme headache, convulsions, hearing impairments such as hearing loss or ringing in the ears, extreme stomach ache, nausea, vomiting, fast heart rhythm,  diarrhea,  black or  bloody stools, appetite loss, dark urine,  jaundice,  fever, flu symptoms, easy bruising or bleeding,  joint stiffness, severe blistering, peeling of skin, skin rash.

Among other side reactions of Accutane medication, that are not so serious are the following:dizziness, nervousness, joint pain, back pain, dry  lips or mouth, peeling skin, itching, rash, and some others.

Consult with your healthcare provider regarding the adverse reactions that are caused by Accutane medication.

Accutane must not be used during pregnancy as it can provoke very serious birth defects. Women should use effective methods of contraception during the treatment with Accutane medication. It’s important to have pregnancy test before starting the treatment to make sure the woman is not pregnant.

Don’t take any vitamin supplements that contain vitamin A together with Isotretinoin as certain side reactions might occur.
